Inclusion of copper atoms in a crystal of sodium chloride by high pressure

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento (1955-1965)

Summary

Pure sodium chloride with a small quantity of cupric chloride has been subjected to high pressure. The pressed specimens show an optical absorption band at 253 mμ. With the increase of applied pressure the band becomes prominent. The pressed specimens when excited with X-rays show fluorescence. It has been concluded that the diffused copper atom acts as activator for a luminescent material.
