The reaction⁷Be(n, α)⁴He and parity conservation in strong interactions

Summary

We have studied experimentally the reactions⁷Be(n, α)⁴He and⁷Be(n, γα)⁴He, produced by thermal neutrons. We have established an upper limit for the first of the two: Σ₁≤0.1 mb. For the second one we have found Σ₂= 155 mb. The limit for Σ₁, in the hypothesis of (2^-) attribution to the 18.9 MeV level of⁸Be, corresponds toF ²≤4.10^-10, whereF is the ratio of the amplitudes of the opposite parity wave functions. This result is used to put an upper limit to the strength of a possible parity-violating interaction involving strange particles.

Riassunto

Abbiamo studiato sperimentalmente le reazioni⁷Be(n, α)⁴He e⁷Be(n, γα)⁴He prodotte da neutroni termioi. Per la prima di esse abbiamo stabilito un limite superiore alla sezione d’urto Σ₁≤0.1 mb, per la seconda abbiamo trovato Σ₂=155 mb. Il limite trovato per Σ₁ ci permette di affermare, nell’ipotesi che il livello 18.9 MeV del⁸Be sia (2^-), che F²≤4.10^-10 (oveF è il rapporto delle ampiezze delle funzioni d’onda di parità opposte). Abbiamo usato questo risultato per stabilire un limite superiore alla forza di una possibile interazione con l’intervento di particelle strane che violi la parità.
