Summary
The Author discusses, through latest theoretical and experimental results regarding magnetic material structure, the hypotheses which act as first step in the theories which, considering magnetic materials from the Ewing's model viewpoint, try to provide hysteresis loop form. He points out that this needs knowledge of space distribution of preferred magnetisation direction in domains and that to have overseen this brought to failure many old and recent theories of hysteresis loop form. In order to have a through picture of space distribution of domain orientation it is necessary to give infinite (one for each direction) values of theI s/Ir parameter, whereI s=saturation intrinsic induction, andI r=residual induction. Theories founding on Ewing's model and supposing no bond between cohercive force and intrinsic induction, come to a relation of this type (I)I/I s=ϕ(H/H c) (whereH c is the single domain cohercive force); this relation obviously holds for rectangular loop whereI r/Is=1. Experimental results taken on fifteen samples of different materials were examined to obtain the limit ofI s/Ir value for which loops can be expressed by formula (1); it has been found that it holds only for loops having no more than slight difference from rectangular form. The experience shows then that, even if such a theory would be sound, it is practically useless because, in order to have a full knowledge of space distribution of domain orientation and consequently of function ϕ, manyI s/Ir values (theoretically one for each direction) are needed and this has no advantage over the complete hysteresis loop drawing. The Author suggests some experiences which could show if, with a given space distribution of domain orientation, the hysteresis loop can or cannot be represented by a relation similar to (1).
