Summary
Stimulated by the claim of Bocchieri and Loinger that the Aharonov-Bohm effect has a purely mathematical origin, and in fact does not exist, we rediscuss the theoretical foundations predicting this effect, and in particular point out that it is the nonexistence of inequivalent representations for the canonical momentum in a physical configuration space which is in principle simply connected that allows this phenomenon to occur. We, furthermore, discuss some criteria for which such an effect is expected, and point out why a toroidal field configuration would in principle be well suited for testing this phenomenon. We also include a qualitative discussion of the AB effect within the path integral formalism and use it to point out some subtleties in the original argument of Aharonov and Bohm.
