Summary
The properties under conformal transformations of a previously suggested nonlinear approach to electrodynamics are studied. It is found that invariance under the conformal groupPO 4,2 can be achieved through the introduction of a massless scalar field (dilaton) associated with the spontaneous breaking of conformal symmetry and having nonzero vacuum expectation value. Alternatively, in a natural way, the theory can be made invariant under the more general conformal groupPO 5,2 by introducing an additional spacelike dimension. Again the hypothesis is made of the noninvariance of the vacuum under the larger conformal group leading to a nonzero vacuum expectation value for the additional component of the electromagnetic field. The possible significance of the additional spatial co-ordinate is discussed and the relevance of thePO 5,2 group for the possible determination of the finestructure constant is mentioned.
