Summary
In this paper we show, utilizing algebraic properties of the covariant Laplace-Beltrami operator on Riemannian manifold, that the one-loop divergences of a scalar field interacting with a classical gravitational background field, are the classical divergences of the heat equation which in the path integral approach defines the Feynman propagator. A like conclusion is obtained for a vacuum gravitational field in the covariant background quantization, if one regards the asymptotic field as a covariant spin-two massless field.
