Summary
The popular impression that children all over the world show a certain similarity leads us to test the following hypothesis: “The facial profile of a child is still a battlefield where genetic tendencies and environmental factors are still fighting.” An epidemiological study was untertaken in Egypt and Belgium and included 153 children from 6 to 8 years of age. The group was divided in three according to the ethnic origin: N1=31 europids or nordids from Belgium, N2=73 europids or Nord-Africans from Egypt, N3=49 negroids or cafrids from Zaire. The groups were homogenous according to sex and age and were free from any pathological in the facial region. The following questions should be answered: 1. Where does the difference between races or between individuals in facial profile start? 2. Which caracters in the integumental profile represent most truly the underlining osseous structures? 3. To what degree can compensating phenomena may be separated from hereditary conditions? Radiographs and photographs of the facial profile were used for this study and 20 parameters were defined. Every question should be answered according to a very specific statistical analysis: 1. A multivariate factor analysis which allows us to state that ethnic factors differentiate much more the integumental profile than the cranial base or the jaw position. 2. The canonical correlation analysis which facilitates the statement that integumental variables represent the cranial base as well as the facial skeleton and that the stomion's position is the most noticeable feature of the skeletal structures. 3. A variance analysis which underlines the individual variability of the cranial base angles and the jaw relationship and which confirms ethnic (genetic or ethological) influences on integumental morphology.
