1.

1.
The arboreal arthropod fauna of Black (Alnus glutinosa) and Grey Alder (Alnus incana) was investigated by the “beating method”in banks of three brooks near Bayreuth (Upper Frankonia, FRG) in 1990.

Phytophagous taxa represented 59% of the individuals in the beating samples (40% of these belonged to the sapsucker guild). Parasitoids and predators made up about 22% of the individuals. The dynamics of abundances of the folivorous groups (Rhynchota, beetles, sawfly and lepidopteran larvae) are described. Folivores occur over the whole vegetation period of the alders. The highest abundances were found from July to the middle of August.

Among the 21 recorded sawfly species Monosoma pulverata, Nematinus luteus, Platycampus luridiventris, Nematinus abdominalis and Nematus polyspilus were the most abundant ones. Pyrrhalta lineola, Agelastica alni, Linaeidea aenea, Phyllobius calcaratus and Polydrusus sericeus were the dominant phytophagous beetles (41 species). On Alnus glutinosa an outbreak of P. lineola took place at one of the sampling sites, which partly resulted in defoliation. This chrysomelid beetle was not known to reach higher densities on alder in central Europe.

4.
Some remarkable differences in the composition of the phytophagous fauna and in the community structure of sawflies and phytophagous beetles were found both between alder species and sampling U.S. Copyright Clearance Center Code Statement: 0015–8003/97/11603-0158 $ 11.00/0 areas. Only few significant differences could be observed between the north and south exposed sides of the brook banks.

The functions of Alders as resources for phytophagous arthropods are discussed. The phenology of Alders as trees belonging to thePopulus-type (sensu Hoffmann a. Lyr 1973) is assumed to largely explain the high numbers of species and high abundances of phytophagous arthropodes in the late season. As a result of their long shoot growing period and in contrast to woody plants of the Queraus-type, alders offer mature as well as young leaves until late summer.
