Atmospheric inputs of some chemical species to the north sea

AtmosphÄrische eintrÄge einiger chemischer verbindungen in die nordsee

Summary

The processes regulating atmospheric concentrations of various contaminants over the North Sea are reviewed. Fluxes for selected contaminants are presented and shown to be comparable to riverine input, but there is evidence that atmospheric fluxes of some contaminants are declining due to reduced emission. Although the fluxes to the southern North Sea are known with some confidence, the inputs to the northern North Sea are less well known. Fluxes of potentially toxic organic compounds are poorly known.
