Abstract
The effect of the kind of raw material on the crystallization capacity of the material and its action on some properties of refractories are described. The endurance of quartz refractories is predominantly affected by the manganese content of the cast steel. The properties, in particular, the pore structure, of the refractories are also very important. At the same content of Mn in the metal the specific wear of steel-casting nozzles can differ by a factor of 1.5–2.5 depending on the structure of the material. The potential service life of quartz steel-casting nozzles is determined as a function of the content of Mn in the cast steel.
