Abstract

From 1970 through 1979, 19 children were diagnosed to have primary peritonitis accounting for 3.6% of all the acute abdominal emergencies. In all the patients the diagnosis could be established only after laparotomy as the clinical and radiological features were not unique. The transmural migration of the bacteria was the possible source of infection in three patients. Gram negative organisms constituted 69.2% of all the pathogens. The treatment consisted of laparotomy, drainage of pus, appendicectomy and appropriate antibiotics. The overall mortality was 31.5%.
