A total of 1375 pupils from seven different schools spread among five areas in Vellore twon were examined in a nutrition survey combining physical examination and blood analysis.

Clinical and biochemical evidences of nutrition deficiencies are presented. Signs indicative of deficiencies in riboflavin and vitamin A were common. Thiamine deficiency was not encountered. Clinical evidences of ascorbic acid deficiency and niacin were negligible.

Haemoglobin values below 100 Gm./100 ml., and serum albumin values below 4 Gm./100 ml. were present in 12.9 per cent and 8.1 per cent of the pupils studied.

Emphasis is laid on the need for school health programmes which include routine medical inspection of children, nutritional education and supplemental feeding.
