Summary
The quantum-mechanical modulation of an electron beam crossing a laser-irradiated solid has been observed and discussed extensively, and similar modulation has been concluded for electron beams crossing solids generating discrete energy losses by plasmons. Starting from the author's analysis of the coherence conditions for electron beams, we define the state of the quantum modulation as a special property of a coherent beam after some inelastic scattering of the electrons in solids by photons or plasmons. From this results the quantum modulation of the electrons emitted from a photocathode by a totally reflected laser beam is discussed, if a volume photoeffect is considered, if at least a part of the photoelectrons have not been scattered inelastically during their transport process within the cathode, and if an anti-Stokes scattering of photoelectrons by the laser photons takes place analogously to the observed modulation effect. The very high monochromaticity of the laser radiation will result in electron beams of very long modulation lengths. Preliminary experiments of Farkas seem to agree with these results.
