Summary
The contribution of inelastic intermediate states in the elastic πd scattering is estimated using a Regge-pole model. It is shown that this effect can fill the dip which otherwise should be present in the differential cross-section.

The inclusion of double-charge-exchange terms in Glauber formulaC. Wilkin:Phys. Rev. Lett.,17, 561 (1966) is already an example of inelastic contributions; we speak here of genuine elastic terms, where the intermediate state in the double scattering has a mass different from that of the incident particle.

It has been recently estimated that the coupling of the deuteron to other channels is only of the order of a few per cent, seeA. K. Kerman andL. S. Kisslinger: MIT preprint 1968.
For simplicity we neglect charge exchange, so that xp and xn amplitudes are equal.
It is generally found that α′ϱ is rather small (in the second paper of ref. (12) it is shown that α′ϱ<0.1).
In a recent preprint (E. Coleman andT. G. Rhoades: Minnesota preprint 1968) the disappearance of the dip is attributed to the effect of theD-wave. In this case the dip would still be present in scattering over polarized deuterons, while in our case it would not be so.
An effect like that in double resonance production was discussed byJ. T. Donohue: CERN preprint TH 844 (1967).
