Absorption of phonons by an electron gas

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento (1955-1965)

Summary

A study is made of the absorption of acoustic waves in metals considering the interaction of the motion of the ions of the crystal with the plasma formed by the conduction electrons. The attenuation of the sound waves is expressed in terms of the imaginary part of the dielectric constant for longitudinal waves and of the imaginary part of of the magnetic permeability for transverse waves. Expressions for both situations are found. They agree with the results obtained byPippard.
