Idiopathic vesical lithiasis in children—Some recent concepts

Summary

The current literature regarding idiopathic vesical lithiasis is reviewed. A concept that it is a neonatal disease appears to be emerging from these studies. It is probable that the stone embryo is formed in the kidney during this vulnerable period by a deficiency of factors, and that subsequently the embryo stone grows in the bladder. Some advance has also been made in recognition of the factors which are deficient. It appears from Van Reen’s work that it may be a form of protein malnutrition with specific deficiency of sulphur containing amino acids. In endemic areas of stone disease, further studies need to be undertaken keeping in view the above findings.
