Acute bacterial meningitis

Factors related to prognosis

Summary

This is a review of the charts of 160 patients with bacterial meningitis admitted to the Nemazee and Saadi University affiliated hospitals located in Shiraz, south-east of Iran, during a period of ten years (1961–1971).

The fatality rate was 45%. In this review, the significant prognostic indicators were: age of the patient, survival time after admission, associated pneumonia, stage of consciousness and presence of convulsions, low or normal peripheral leucocyte count.
