Summary
Indices of foetal growth (as determined by weight, height, head circumference and chest circumference at birth) were measured in over 3000 live births of over 1000 G. in two groups of mothers from high and low socioeconomic levels. The results indicated that the average birth weight, head and chest circumference were lower in the newborns of the indigent group when compared with the private group. However, the difference in length was significant only in girls. It appears that newborn girls are not only shorter than boys, but are more seriously affected in all other measurements.
