Summary
-
1.
Serum electrolyte estimations were performed in twenty-eight severely malnourished marasmic children.
-
2.
Majority of the cases revealed low normal serum sodium and chloride, normal serum potassium and high serum bicarbonate values.
-
3.
Serum ionogram was repeated in nine cases at the end of two to four weeks, during which the subjects were placed on routine dietetic and high protein diet. These ionograms showed a distinct tendency towards reversion to normal.
-
4.
The significance of these observations is discussed.
