Summary

Modern algebraic concepts are shown to be compatible with models in physics. These abstract ideas are then used to frame a definition of an abstract physics; the definition is then used to analyse the greater part of « ordinary » physics and to throw light on various theories and methods of finding natural laws. In all, nine examples of the abstract physics are produced, viz., Ph I (a geometry of space) toPh IX (electromagnetism), in each of which the significance of the (1-1) correspondence is brought out, as well as the idea of the generating elements. Among the latter, base-element is singled out for its special role, and it is shown that observation of such an element contains a built-in natural law. A final result is obtained inPh IX of an abstract conservation of energy in the algebra S22 The analysis stops short, in each case, of considering field theories.
