Summary
It is shown by the example of a neutral scalar field that the scattering of a plane monochromatic beam of mesons by a free nucleon can lead to scattered particles having energies that are integral multiples of the energy of the incident particles. Explicit calculations for scattering into particles of twice the original energy are made and the cross-section is shown to be proportional directly to the intensity and inversely to the energy of the incident particle beam. The significance of the effect and its quantum analogue are discussed.
