Summary

In a study of chronic suppurative otitis media among children attending a Rural Health Centre at Lucknow, the majority (47.4%) was in the age group of 10–14 years and males (57.9%).Staph. aureaus was the commonest isolate (44.0%) followed byE. coli (11.1%),Staph. albus (10.2%),Strep. pyogenes (8.5%).Strep. viridans (5.9%),Prot. vulgaris (5.9%) and others.

The commonest type of discharge was a purulent one and was more often associated with organisms likeStaph. aureus, Strep. pyogenes, Prot. vulgaris andE. coli. Staph. aureus, the commonest organism, was found to be highly sensitive to erythromycin and gentamycin as compared to other antibiotics. The organisms like Proteus, Pseudomonas,E. coli and Klebsiella were found relatively resistant and only gentamycin and kanamycin were found useful against them.
