Summary
The management of dehydration due to acute gastroenteritis in infancy at the village level has been described. The aim of the paper is to show that fluid and electrolyte therapy can be made simple, easy to administer, physiologically correct, effective and cheap, so as to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with gastroenteritis. Most of the cases of diarrhoea and vomiting can be managed in the village on the lines suggested above.
