Physiological “norms” in Indians

Summary

The growth curve during the first month of a “normal” child born to middle class rice eating parents from Bengal or South India living in the city of Calcutta is presented. The study is based on a day to day observation of forty six babies. Each of the babies was born normally from a clinically full term uterus without any instrumental help.

The new born baby weighing six and a half pounds loses about 9 or 10 ozs. of its birth weight in the first three days and takes another week to regain the birth weight. Subsequently, the normal child puts on about 1.1 to 1.3 oz. of weight daily.

A range of normality is presented to the medical profession as the possible reasonable expectation under Indian conditions.
