Studies in haematology of the new-born infants

Summary

  1. (1)

    Hæmatologic investigation of 223 new-born infants are recorded.

  2. (2)

    The average values for hæmoglobin, red-cell count, cell-volume, mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hæmoglobin at birth in normal infants were found to be 18·73 gms., 6·74 millions, 57·2 per cent, 85·7 c.m. and 28·1 γγ. respectively.

  3. (3)

    The difference between the blood and capillary blood findings at birth has been noted.

  4. (4)

    The asphyxiated infants and babies born of toxæmic mothers showed increased red blood-cell, hæmoglobin and cell-volume figures.

  5. (5)

    A study of the blood picture of premature infants and babies born of anæmic mothers is also included and compared with normal findings.

  6. (6)

    A brief summary of the reticulocyte count and abnormal red blood corpuscles is also given.
