The trace anomaly of theCP N-1 model

  • Published:
Lettere al Nuovo Cimento (1971-1985)

Summary

We calculate the trace of the effective energy-momentum tensor for theCP N-1 model in the 1/N approximation. The conformai invariance of the classical theory is broken by quantum fluctuations. As a consequence the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor is different from zero and proportional to the square of the physical mass. The calculation shows that besides this mass term there is an additional term which contributes to the on-shell trace. This term is proportional to the β-function and has to be identified with the trace anomaly.
