The attenuation length of extensive air showers in air

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento (1955-1965)

Summary

A multiplate cloud chamber was controlled by GM counters and those photographs were selected in which the directions of the shower axes could be determined eithera) from the directions of one or more energetic particles, orb) from the directions of parallel particles. From the distribution of the projected zenith angles of the shower axes the following values of the attenuation length (λ) were obtained: in the casea)λ= 85±5 gcm−2, and in the caseb) λ = 101±8 gcm−2.
