Conclusion
-
i)
The simple formula σ+ = σ/4q2 describes the total cross-section data at (4/60) GeV/c with, a remarkable accuracy.
-
ii)
If this formula is inserted into the forward dispersion relation for all momenta above 4 GeV/c, one obtains a prediction for the real part in agreement with the data.
-
iii)
It would be useful to reconsider critically the arguments, which led to the expectation that an important contribution to πN scattering comes from f- or P’-exchange, where αP’(0) ≈ 0.5.
-
iv)
The tail of the Coulomb interference term in dσ-/dt - dσ+/dt could be larger than expected.
