Summary
A combined forest inventory with particular application of 35 mm and 70 mm aerial photo sampling is described.
The sampling techniques are applicable to inventories of managed stands as well as to large-area inventories. However, the conventional approach to forest assessment does not permit expansion of regional results to the national level.
In recent times cost efficiency of inventory designs requires the combination of resource information from medium and large-scale photography and from sampling in the field.
The combined multi-phase inventory methods described here has the following particular features:
The use of large-scale 70 mm color stereo pairs for photo sampling, 35 mm sequential color slides for strip sampling of land-use patterns and forest strata, use of point sampling techniques on field plots.
Details of the stereo-camera system, consisting of the two Hasselblad 70 mm cameras with a fixed base a Canon 35 mm camera for the sequential photography, and aircraft attachments are described.
An advantage of this method is its flexibility and adaptability to a range of assessment objectives and the relatively short period necessary for taking aerial photographs.
