Summary

The optical response of impulsive sheared homeotropically oriented samples of liquid crystals is observed. The analysis of the slow relaxation mode in the nematic gives results in good agreement with the de Gennes theory, and the method can be applied to obtain information for the viscous constant of the material. The optical modulation that is present in the smecticA-phase indicates that hydrodynamic instability can take place also in this material.

Si analizza la risposta ottica di campioni di cristalli liquidi orientati omeotropicamente sotto l'azione di deformazioni di taglio impulsive. L'analisi del modo di rilassamento lento presentato in fase nematica risulta in buon accordo con la teoria di de Gannes; il metodo può essere utilizzato per misurare le costanti viscose del materiale. La modulazione ottica presente in fase smeticaA sembra indicare che instabilità idrodinamiche possono aver luogo anche in tale fase.

Исследуется оптический отклик ориентированных образцов жидких кристаллов, подвергнутых деформации сдвига. Анализ медленной моды релаксации приводит к результатам, хорошо согласующимся с теорией де Женеса. Предложенный метод модет быть использован для получения информации о константе вязкости материала. Оптическая модуляция, которая присутствует в смектическойA фазе, указывает на то, что в этом материале может существовать гидродинамическая неустойчивость.
