Summary
The mathematical consequences of the hypothesis that physical laws should be invariant under space-time-dependent changes in the unit of length are investigated. The hypothesis leads to the introduction of a scalar field and a vector field; the vector field enters the formalism in the same way as that of Weyl’s geometry, with which it can be identified, but since it does not couple to spin-1/2 fields it is not interpretable as the electromagnetic potential. The theory obtained does not satisfy energy-momentum conservation and therefore allows creation of matter. The relationship between the conformally covariant theory and the cosmological theories of Hoyle and Narlikar and of Brans and Dicke is discussed.
