Spontaneous symmetry-breaking effects in some soluble field-theoretical models

Summary

The problem of constructing nonrelativistic field theories which display a nontrivial spontaneous symmetry breakdown is considered within the framework of some simple soluble models. It is demonstrated by direct calculation that the formal construction of the symmetry-breaking solutions by means of an improper operator transformation is entirely equivalent to solving the equations for the Green's functions subject to a broken-symmetry condition. As an auxiliary result some useful techniques are developed for dealing with theories which do not have vacuum polarization effects.

  6. Strictly speaking the solutions we obtain become singular in the case of a stable V particle so that for nonvanishing symmetry breaking λ must be chosen less than the critical value necessary to produce such a particle. Thus the theory described by (13) should not be considered as being directly related to the Lee model.
