Summary
Coherent light beams provide a new way to probe atomic absorption. Atomic absorption can be a coherent process, which depends on the relative amplitude, phase and intersection angle of coherent beams. A study of dependences leads to a mechanism for revealing the phase of the two-photon Doppler-free transition amplitude.
