Acceleration and radiation around oblique rotators

Summary

Particles accelerated by the e.m. fields existing near a rotating, magnetized neutron star are widely held to be the source of activity of NP 0531, and of the whole Crab Nebula at high frequencies at least. We derive the main features of the radiation from these particles and discuss a) the production of flashes in IR to X-ray bands in the upper magnetosphere, a feature likely associated with any appreciable azimuthal asymmetry of the stellar magnetid field, b) the sweeping of high-energy electrons beyondr ≈ c/Ω and c) the nebular radiation as resulting from the wave field configuration extending unperturbed into the Nebula, the least realistic feature of the model.
