Summary
The most general scalar Lagrangian density leading to Einstein’s field equations contains two invariantsF,K quadratic in the components of the curvature tensor. The LagrangianL=(−g)1/2 F is considered in this note. The vanishing of the Lagrangian derivative leads to a set of identities and to a representation of (−g)1/2 F as the divergence of a 4-component quantity. An expression for this quantity is determined which depends on the metricg αβ and its derivative only. The contribution ofL=(−g)1/2 F to the canonical energy-momentum complex is calculated.
