Summary
The dynamics of general relativity is considered as the evolution of the field variables along a null-time co-ordinate. Starting from the first-order Palatini action, algebraic constraints are eliminated and differential constraints found after choice of the ray gauge conditiong iv=0. The dynamical role of field components is analysed. It is given the form of the unconstrained action and of the associated null-energyJ u for the gaugeg uv=−1 in terms of only two dynamical variables,g Tij and Γ uT iu , the minimum number of variables expected for describing the dynamics of the self-interacting helicity 2-massless Einstein field.
