Bernard Huber (Switzerland) A Swiss teacher, defended a doctoral thesis on the history of geography teaching at the primary level in French-speaking Switzerland at the University of Geneva in 1994. Lectures in the teaching of geography at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences at the same university. His most recent articles deal chiefly with the history of geography teaching (inGeographica helvetica, April 1997; and inMappemonde, forthcoming). A book collector and the owner of a considerable collection of early children's books (from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century, mainly of a geographical nature), he is also researching the history of geographical literature for children.

The article was written in collaboration with América Rodríguez.
