Linda Asturias (Guatemala) Ph.D. Currently special adviser to the Minister of Culture in Guatemala. She was previously in charge of the Unit for International and National Technical Co-operation of the Ministry of Education and Technical director of the ethnographical museum. She has published on sociolinguistic aspects of bilingual education.

Katherine Grigsby (Nicaragua) Chief Technical Adviser of UNESCO for the Project to Mobilize Support for Mayan Education (PROMEM) in Guatemala. She has held various positions in the Ministry of Education in Nicaragua and was Vice Minister of Education, 1988–90. She was appointed Executive Director of CRIES (Regional Organization for Economic and Social Research for Central America and the Caribbean) in 1993. She has authored education materials and several articles.

Theo Oltheten (Netherlands) A development sociologist, working until recently as senior education adviser at the Netherlands Organisation for International Co-operation in Higher Education (NUFFIC), The Hague. He has undertaken many consultancy assignments in basic education on behalf of the Netherlands, the European Commission and other international agencies, particularly in Latin America. He recently co-published in SpanishCulture of peace in El Salvador: some comments on peace education. At present, he is posted as education sector specialist at the Royal Netherlands Embassy at Bamako, Mali.
