Summary
The possibility of existence of lepton-antilepton massless vector bound states due to weak interactions is investigated with the help of a spinor-spinor Bethe-Salpeter equation in the ladder approximation. A phenomenological kernel is used, reproducing at large distances thex −6 behaviour of the long-range forces due to exchange of neutrino pairs between leptons and being logarithmically divergent at short distances. After expansion of the amplitude intoO ΠC4 generalized harmonics, the equation is reduced to three systems of coupled Fredholm integral equations for the spectral functions, each system corresponding to differentO 4 and/orΠC quantum numbers. In the zeroth-order approximation the form factor of the vertex is given for general values of the quantum numbers, and the relative effective renormalized coupling constant computed. It turns out that the only physically acceptable solutions correspond to bound states of spin 1,ΠC=+1. They may belong either to the representation (1/2, 1/2) ofO 4 or to (1, 0)⊕(0, 1); in the former case the effective renormalized coupling constant turns out to be a pure number (2π√3), while in the second case its value depends on the masses of the constituent leptons and, for the electron, is about 0.70.
