Summary
The time which elapses between the passage of the primary ionizing event and the subsequent development of the electrical pulse at the wire has been investigated for the halogen-quenched counters. These delays range from a few microseconds at the threshold to a few tenths of a microsecond at an overvoltage of about 100 volt. The second part constitutes the observation of pulse forms at Geiger threshold with smaller time constants in the amplification chain in order to obtain diversely differentiated pulses. The data cannot be accounted for satisfactorily by build-up as a result of metastable action at the cathode, positiveion bombardment of the cathode and negative-ion formation in the gas. The resonance radiation as well as the delayed emission through an intermediary stage of excited molecular argon formation do not seem to be promising. The results seem to be explainable if photoelectric effect at the cathode is considered to be a secondary mechanism. The observed delays are the « transit lags » of electrons due to decreased mobility at these lower values ofE/p.
