Summary

It is shown how the motion of an electron in a given external classical electromagnetic field is derived fromS-matrix principles.

Riassunto

Si mostra come il moto di un elettrone in un dato campo elettromagnetico classico esterno possa essere dedotto dai principi della matriceS.

Реэюме

InS-matrix theory one retains covariance, and hence uses the covariant Lorentz gauge, in which the four components ofA μ are treated on an equal footing. The question of gauge invariance in theS-matrix framework has been discussed byD. Zwanziger:Phys. Rev.,133, B 1036 (1964), and inLectures in Theoretical Physics, Vol.7 a (Boulder, 1965), and byS. Weinberg:Phys. Rev.,135, B 1049 (1964).Zwanziger shows how the gauge invariance of the fullS-matrix comes out of the covariance conditions, plus the condition that the photons be massless spin-one particles. However, the individual terms of an expansion in terms of physical-particle poles are not necessarily gauge invariant. Thus, they must be expressed in terms of theA μ , rather than theF μν . But since the fullS-matrix involves onlyF μν , the contributions toA μ alongq μ have no net effect. The conditionA·q=0 is a consequence of the spin-one requirement.
