Multiperipheral bootstrap model withSU 3 multiplets

Summary

The ABFST multiperipheral bootstrap model, studied recently by various authors withSU 2 multiplets (ρ and f mesons etc., exchanged between π-mesons), is enlarged to useSU 3 multiplets (octets of vector mesons, nonets of tensor mesons etc., exchanged between octets of pseudoscalar mesons). It is found that this increases the effective strength of the interaction slightly, but not enough to yield output trajectories with the correct intercepts. The calculation appears to yield f and f′ trajectories but no pomeron trajectory. Exchange degeneracy is broken for the output trajectories in this type of model in which an interaction potential is iterated, and this seems to be a serious difficulty.

Il modello bootstrap multiperiferico dell’ABFST, studiato recentemente da alcuni autori con multiplettiSU 2 (i mesoni ρ e f ecc., scambiati fra mesoni π), si dilata per usare i multiplettiSU 3 (ottetti di mesoni vettoriali, nonetti di mesoni tensoriali ecc., scambiati fra ottetti di mesoni pseudoscalari). Si trova che questo incrementa leggermente la forza effettiva dell’interazione, ma non abbastanza per fornire la traiettoria d’uscita con le corrette intercettazioni. Il calcolo fornisce le traiettorie di f e f’ ma non quella del pomerone.   12. It has been pointed out to the author by Prof.M. L. Goldberger and by the reviewer of this paper that treating the higher spin exchanges like scalar exchanges, as we have done in the present work, yields trajectories which are too flat. Thus for vector meson exchange one should include an additional factor cosϑ=1+2t/(μ 2−4m 2), if the pseudoscalar mesons can be treated as on shell with massm and if the exchanged meson has massμ. Forμ > 2m the potential is strengthened for positivet and weakened for negativet. The trajectories will then have the samet=0 intercept but will have a larger slope.
