The ground state spin of 21284 Po

Summary

The angular correlation between the β transitions (energy 2.27 MeV) from the ground state of 21283 Bi to the ground state of 21284 Po and the α particles (energy 8.776 MeV) from the ground state of 21284 Po to the ground state of 20882 Pb, and the angular correlation between the γ rays (energy 0.727 MeV) from the first excited state to the ground state of 21284 Po and the above α particles have been measured. The very short lifetime of 21284 Po allowed us to perform these measurements. We have found isotropic correlations in opposition to previous experimental results. Our results are in agreement with theJ=0+ assignment to the ground state of the even-even nucleus 21284 Po.

Si è proceduto alla misurazione della correlazione angolare tra le transizioni β (energia 2.27 MeV) dallo stato fondamentale del 21283 Bi allo stato fondamentale del 21284 Po e le particelle α (energia 8.776 MeV) dallo stato fondamentale del 21284 Po allo stato fondamentale del 20882 Pb, e della correlazione angolare tra i raggi γ (energia 0.727 MeV) dal primo stato eccitato allo stato fondamentale del 21284 Po e le particelle α emesse da questo nucleo. Queste misurazioni sono state possibili grazie al brevissimo periodo di dimezzamento del 21284 Po. Non si è trovato anisotropia contrariamente a risultati precedenti. I risultati sperimentali ottenuti sono in accordo con l’assegnazioneJ=0+ allo stato fondamentale del nucleo pari pari 21284 Po.
