Optical erosion

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento (1955-1965)

Summary

A review is presented of some of the facts and ideas related to the possible erosive action of light on condensed matter. Various mechanisms are described which would be expected to lead to erosion. These include « bond-breaking », auto-ionization, indirect, phonon-assisted processes, local heating phenomena, etc. Some special cases are mentioned in which photo-disintegration has been observed, although these examples are not true erosion in the sense intended here. Areas of possible importance of this effect are mentioned, large ignorance of its efficiency is exposed, and pertinent experiments are suggested.
