On the spin dependence of the Λ-N interaction

Summary

Rhe ratiow j between the lifetimes for the decays3HΛ → →3He+π and3HΛ → D+p+π has been calculated as a function of the spinj of the3HΛ (j=1/2 orj=3/2). The experimental valuew exp≲1 favoursj=1/2, showing that the Λ-N potential is more attractive in the singlet than in the triplet state. This result does not depend critically on the choice of the wave functions, becausew 3/2/w 1/2 is independent of it.

Si calcola in funzione dello spinj dell’3HΛ (j=1/2 oj=3/2) il rapportoω j fra le vite medie dei due decadimenti3HΛ3He+π e3HΛ → D+p+π . Il miglior accordo col valore sperimentaleω exp≲1 si ha perj=1/2, e ciò mostra che il potenziale A-N è maggiormente attivo nello stato di singoletto che in quello di tripletto. Questo risultato non dipende criticamente dalla scelta delle funzioni, poichèω 3/2/ω 1/2 ne è indipendente.

When this work was completed, we have received a preprint of a paper byM. Leon, who calculates the fraction of decays in two bodies of the3HΛ and compares it with the experimental value; his conclusions are in agreement with the results we have here obtained.
