Summary
Direct production mechanisms of heavy quarkonium states in hadronic Z0 decays are discussed. A search is described for direct production of J/ψ, ψ(2S) and γ in more than 3 million of the 1991–1994 DELPHI data. In the presence of a small excess (∼1% statistical probability) in the sum of candidate events relative to the estimated background, new upper limits are set in the range BR(Z0→(Q\(\bar Q\))X)/BR(Z0→hadrons)<0.87−8.7·10−4 (90% c.l.) for various strong production mechanisms of J/ψ and γ(1S, 2S, 3S).
