Observation of open-charm production in ep collisions at HERA

Summary

New results from the ZEUS and H1 experiments on the production of D*(2010) mesons and charm identification via its semi-leptonic decays are reported. The D* production is determined by measuring the reaction chain D*± → D0π ±s , D0 → Kπ+ (and c.c.). The semi-leptonic results are obtained from the inclusive μ samples. Total D* and charm photoproduction (Q 2<4 GeV2) cross-section are presented for γp centre-of-mass energies ranging from 115 to 265 GeV. The results are compared with next-to-leading-order QCD calculations. Other decay modes of D0(D0 → Kπ+π+π), decays of other charmed hadrons and D* production in the deep inelastic regionQ 2>4 GeV2 are also shown.
