Summary
In terms of certain spectral moments which involve the total e+e− annihilation cross-sectionσ e+e−(s), an explicit formula is derived for the intrinsic mean square radius 〈x 2〉 2 Q of a real or virtual photon (Q 2 is the spacelike photon mass squared). The radius measures an average spatial extension which is induced by the photon’s virtual hadronic couplings. Ifσ e+e−(s)/σ(e+e− → μ+μ−) ∼cs η ass→∞, where −1/2<η<1/2 (andc is a constant), then 〈x 2〉 2 Q ∼Ψ(η)/Q 2 whenQ 2 → ∞, where the constant coefficientΨ(η) ≡ (1/2−η)/(1/2+η). For example, in the case of «pointlike» behaviour ofσ e+e−(s) for whichη≡0,Ψ(0)≡1 and 〈x 2〉 2 Q ∼ 1/Q 2 asQ 2→∞. A similar formula for the on-mass-shell pion (in any isospin state) yields an upper bound\(\left\langle {x^2 } \right\rangle _\pi ^{\tfrac{1}{2}}< \left( {{1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 {\sqrt 3 }}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\sqrt 3 }}} \right)\left( {{\hbar \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {\hbar {m_\pi c}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {m_\pi c}}} \right) \simeq 0.82\) fm. Phenomenological applications are made of 〈x 2〉 2 Q to diffraction slopes and cross-sections in virtual Compton scattering and in the virtual photoproduction process of a vector system (in particular, γ(Q 2)p → ρ0p).
\kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\sqrt 3 }}} \right)\left( {{\hbar \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {\hbar {m_\pi c}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {m_\pi c}}} \right) \simeq 0.82\) fm.
\kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\sqrt 3 }}} \right)\left( {{\hbar \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {\hbar {m_\pi c}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {m_\pi c}}} \right) \simeq 0.82\) fm.
