Summary
The Glauber model is applied to the inelastic scattering of protons, and the electromagnetic-transition form factor is derived from the same formula. The shell model of12C* (2+, 3−) is improved in a new calculation. The spin effects for the proton scattering at small momentum transfers are discussed; they are found to explain an earlier discrepancy in the description of the 3− excitation. Exact evaluations of the Glauber formula give excellent agreement with proton scattering experiments for small momentum transfersq. Forq 2>5 fm−2 the calculated results are too small for 2+ excitation and too big for 3−. The « exact » results are compared with two approximate versions of the Glauber theory.
