Path-dependent approach to gravitational monopoles

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento B (1971-1996)

Summary

We discuss the possibility of introducing gravitational analogues of magnetic monopoles (i.e. sources of the dual Riemann tensor) into Einstein's equations, in the framework of Mandelstam's path-dependent formulation of the gravitational field. It is shown that, by this approach, gravitational monopoles arise straightforwardly from a consistency requirement for the theory. Moreover, their existence implies a local violation of the energy-momentum conservation law. Possible consequences and developments of the theory are considered.
